5 unique experiences in Tamil Nadu

Updated: Oct 14

Located in the southeastern corner of India, Tamil Nadu is often celebrated for its magnificent temple towns, but the region offers so much more beyond these iconic sites. By slowing down the pace and exploring lesser-known activities and communities, visitors can uncover hidden gems and create truly memorable experiences on their journey.

Here are some of my favourite unique experiences to include on a Tamil Nadu itinerary:

1. Visit the Bronze Casters of Swamimalai

The wax bronze casters of Swamimalai, Tamil Nadu, are renowned for their mastery of an ancient craft that dates back over a thousand years. Using the lost-wax technique, these skilled artisans create exquisite bronze statues, particularly of Hindu deities, each one a unique work of art. The process is painstakingly detailed, beginning with a hand-carved wax model, which is then encased in clay and replaced with molten metals to form the final sculpture. Swamimalai’s bronze casters continue to uphold this traditional craft, blending spirituality and artistry in each piece. A visit to this village offers a rare glimpse into one of India’s oldest artisanal traditions, where devotion and craftsmanship are intricately intertwined. Don't forget to browse the showroom of the bronze statues too, each one has been created by a specific artisan - from trainee casters, to expert masters.

2. Browse the ashram shops in Pondicherry

Shopping at the Aurobindo Ashram outlets in Pondicherry offers a unique opportunity to purchase a variety of beautifully crafted, handmade products that are not found anywhere else. From their in-house handmade paper and marbled textiles to toiletries, essential oils, and incense, each item reflects the Ashram's commitment to quality and sustainability. You might even have the chance to observe artisans at work, creating intricate batik designs, providing an authentic glimpse into the craftsmanship and dedication behind these goods.

3. Get a garment tailored in Madurai

Having a tailored item made by the skilled tailors of Madurai is a unique and personalised experience that offers a deep connection to the city’s vibrant textile tradition. Recently relocated from their old, iconic location within the city, these tailors continue their craft with precision and passion. Whether it’s a traditional kurta, sari blouse, or custom-fitted Western attire, they create garments with expert tailoring and attention to detail, often completed in just a day or two. Getting a piece of clothing made here allows you to take home not just a custom outfit, but a piece of Madurai’s enduring heritage. Your purchase also helps to support the tailors, who have seen a significant drop in passing trade following their forced relocation to a hidden upstairs corner of a shopping complex near to the Meenakshi Temple.

4. Browse the antique markets in Chettinad

The antique markets and shops in Karaikudi, located in the heart of Chettinad, offer a treasure trove of history and charm for visitors seeking authentic pieces of South India’s cultural heritage. Known for its grand Chettiar mansions, Karaikudi’s antique shops are filled with a few reproductions but many unique finds too, from colonial-era furniture, intricately carved wooden doors, and vintage brassware to traditional Chettinad tiles and artifact's. Exploring these shops and rummaging through the shelves feels like stepping back in time, with each piece telling a story of the region’s rich past. Whether you're an avid collector or simply curious, the Karaikudi antique market is a fascinating place to discover timeless relics of Tamil Nadu’s architectural legacy.

5. Go bird and butterfly watching at Mantra Koodam

CGH Earth Mantra Koodam in Kumbakonam, is a haven for bird and butterfly enthusiasts. Just steps from your room, you can observe an array of vibrant butterfly species fluttering through the lush gardens, including the Crimson Rose and Blue Mormon. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting colourful birds like the Indian Roller, Red-vented Bulbul and Purple-rumped Sunbird among the trees and gardens surrounding the property. The serene environment of Mantra Koodam offers a perfect setting to appreciate the region’s rich biodiversity right on your doorstep.
